PRESS RELEASE -

The Government of Québec limits access to the MRC d’Argenteuil region as a preventive measure

Lachute, April 1, 2020 – In order to contain the spread of COVID-19, the Government of Québec adopted Ministerial Order 2020-013 today aimed at limiting travel to and from four new regions of Québec, including the MRC d’Argenteuil. As of noon today, checkpoints have been set up around and within the MRC d’Argenteuil.

According to the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux and the Sûreté du Québec, travel should be limited to trips for medical reasons and work when teleworking is not possible. Roadside checkpoints will reduce travel into and out of certain regions and territories that are more vulnerable and help contain the spread of the virus.In the case of the MRC d’Argenteuil, these control measures are aimed at preserving the low infection rates currently found in the region. To keep these rates as low as possible, the MRC d’Argenteuil reminds the population that it is more important than ever to follow self-isolation and social distancing measures and to apply government directives to the letter. This is not the time to relax our efforts!

The MRC d’Argenteuil Council applauds this decision by the Government of Québec to set up checkpoints along the roads leading to its territory. “We are aware that these are restrictive measures, but in the current context, we must redouble our efforts to protect the public. Everyone’s cooperation is essential,” said MRC warden Scott Pearce.

Paying municipal taxes – 1st instalment

The City of Lachute would like to inform the population of the procedure for paying the first tax instalment due on April 1.

In accordance with the Cities and Towns Act, the City of Lachute is maintaining the April 1, 2020 due date for the payment of the first instalment of municipal taxes. However, the City will change the interest rate for late payments. The new rate will be set at 0% for any delay in the payment of property taxes, supplemental taxes and transfer tax (welcome tax) so as not to impose an additional financial burden on persons or businesses who have suffered a loss of income. The implementation of this measure is equivalent to, and has the same impact as, the postponement of the payment date. It is important to remember that citizens who are able to pay their taxes must do so in order to ensure the continuity of our municipal services.

The City wishes to remind citizens that, while it will not be possible to pay taxes directly at City Hall, there are several other payment options available:

  • though the online services of most banking institutions;
  • through your mortgage company;
  • by cheque or money order sent by mail or deposited in the mailbox at City Hall (see image below).

Please note that due to bank delays and the fact that the municipal administration is operating at reduced staff levels due to the current situation (COVID-19), there may be a slight delay in cashing cheques.

Given the uncertainty of the situation, the City will keep you informed of the procedure for paying the July and October instalments.

We ask the population to follow the prevention recommendations issued by the Government of Québec. To this effect, the City wishes to remind the population of the following guidelines provided by Public Health to limit the spread of the virus:

  • Avoid touching your face;
  • Avoid shaking hands;
  • Cough into your elbow;
  • Avoid contact with others if you are ill;

Be particularly attentive to the following symptoms:

i)       Cough

ii)      Fever

iii)    Difficulty breathing

If you believe you have been exposed to or are at risk of contracting COVID-19, or if you are experiencing any of its related symptoms, call the Coronavirus Hotline at 1 877-644-4545. If you have symptoms, please remain in isolation at home and limit all social interactions.

We also remind you that more information about COVID-19, prevention measures and means of transmission is available on the quebec.ca/coronavirus website.

“The City of Lachute is in communication with all partners in the community, including the CISSS, the Sûreté du Québec, schools and community organizations. Many organizations have assured us of their complete collaboration. We want to reassure the public that all measures are being put in place to ensure everybody’s safety, and to slow the spread of COVID-19. In addition, we are aware that the population of Lachute is particularly vulnerable since it includes a large proportion of seniors. We wish to exercise great caution in these circumstances, in consideration of this population at risk, so that our community is affected as little as possible. With this in mind, we are appealing to the public for solidarity. I would also like to thank the City of Lachute employees for their dedication and hard work in maintaining quality services for the population, despite the circumstances”, commented City of Lachute Mayor, Carl Péloquin.

Thank you for your understanding and your collaboration.
